Today Fraser started signing back to me for the first time ever! Though I suppose, in all fairness, that he actually started signing back to me about a week ago, but it took me until today to figure out what he was doing. His first sign is, I think, supposed to be the sign for milk. He was actually waiting for his cereal this morning when he started signing, but as we haven't shown him a sign for cereal I think "milk" is his generalized sign for all food. Anyway, the sign for milk involves opening and closing your hand as though you were milking a cow. Fraser's sign involves rolling his wrist around and wiggling his fingers so it sort of looks like he is praciticing the hula.
Looking back over the week I now realize that he was using this sign when he was starting to get hungry. It's so exciting to see him really trying to communicate specific things now! I think his next sign will be a toss up between "more" and "cat," or maybe "violin" as in "I am a child protegee, bring me a violin so that I may begin my rise to glory." It could be "dog" too I suppose.
