Just a quick post to let everyone know that Hammie's surgery yesterday went really well. He was definitely out of sorts yesterday, but seems to be in a much better mood today and is already up and walking around just fine. It should be quite the challenge to try to convince him to take it easy for the next few days!

Hammie actually threw up when we first got the hospital, which was totally bizarre, and was very clinging and antisocial. Andy and I were concerned that they might cancel his surgery (and more concerned that they would go ahead with the surgery and he would puke again) but everything went fine. He did throw up a little again when they tried to put his IV in in the operating room, but they thought that was likely because he was scared and angry, so they gave him a little anesthesia to help him relax and vacuumed out his stomach (and no, he hadn't eaten anything since dinner the night before, but there was still food in there, go figure.)

They also gave him this magical cherry flavored drug which is supposed to help him relax and prevent him from remembering anything about the surgery. The anesthesiologist explained it by saying, "It's really pretty funny. He'll act like a little drunken sailor." I was slightly offended by this explanation since I didn't see anything funny about my 19 month old being given something that essentially makes him drunk. Then they gave him the drug, and it was absolutely hysterical. He was suddenly laughing and smiling goofily and cracking himself up by making his little stuffed bunny jump up and down Andy's leg. He was so relaxed that he didn't even blink when they loaded him into his crib gurney, and he amused all the nurses by lying on his back with his ankles crossed as they wheeled him down the hallway.

I think I held it together pretty well, and only burst into tears once when we had to leave him to be wheeled into the operating room and we had to go sit in the waiting room. Overall though, I think we all handled it pretty well (Fraser went totally berserk on our poor babysitter when he first got up and realized that we were all gone, but after a couple hours of screaming and crying he apparently calmed down and played nicely). It is at least nice to have the surgery behind us, and now we can move on to the recovery and getting ready for my surgery in only two more weeks!
