Today Hammie had his 2-month visit to the doctor, which went both well and not so well. On the positive side Hammie is now 24 inches long and weighs 13 pounds and 11 ounces. This puts him in the 90th percentiles for both height and weight, which means he is tracking along perfectly on both growth charts. On a side note, Hammie is exactly as long as Fraser was at 2 months, but weighs somewhat less (Fraser was 14 pounds, 3 ounces). Most interesting I thought, was that Hammie's head circumference is now 40.5cm. Fraser's was 43 cm. I knew Fraser's head was huge, and here is proof enough. No wonder my body refused to dilate enough to push his giant melon out. Also on the positive side Hammie was very good when he had to get his three shots and even though he cried at first, he calmed himself down very quickly.

Now the not-so-positive side; it looks like Hammie has a hernia on the right side of his scrotum. The left testicle is still undescended and now the right side of his scrotum is swollen and filled with fluid. This isn't immediately dangerous, but basically raises the concern that part of his intestines could become stuck in the hernia and swell, thereby creating a very dangerous situation. So, Hammie now has an appointment on Monday with a specialist. Our pediatrician thinks surgery will almost certainly be required. The down side of this is that it is surgery and will of course require anesthesia, which of course worries me to no end. The positive side is that they will most likely use this opportunity to pull down his undescended testicle too, which means he'll only have to go in for surgery once. Basically I am still absorbing this information here, and once I have fully accepted it I will move on to deciding how badly to freak out (I'm leaning in the direction of a damn near hysterical freak out, but I'll let you know when I reach my final decision).
